Snoozing is one thing that I have done ever since I
discovered what it was back in middle school. I have switched alarms clocks
over the years, so my length of snoozing has changed and I have subsequently
adapted. Currently, I use my iPad and its default time of nine minutes, which I
find to be very useful. I know I’m not alone in this, so all you snoozers,
unite!
Some people (like my mom) may give the argument of “if you
wake up, you should just get up!” and don’t like the fact that I snooze. Snoozing,
to me, is not about avoiding the day and being lazy and not getting up. It’s
about preparing yourself for the day ahead. It all depends on how awake I
become once my alarm goes off. If I am tired, I can fall back asleep and
literally dream for all of those nine minutes. If I become semi-awake, I can mentally
pick out what clothes I will wear that day, decide what I’ll do with my hair, remember
where everything that goes in my backpack is, and reflect on everything I have
to do.
Snoozing is an art, and I have a method that works for me. For
someone who loves planning and scheduling out a majority of her day, it makes
sense that even how I start my day is pretty much scheduled to the minute, starting
with the snooze. If my alarm goes off at 6:20 and I snooze, I get up at 6:29.
If in my morning schedule I plan to start doing things at 6:30, I get an extra
minute to find my glasses, fully wake up, or even get a head start on my 6:30
tasks so that I can take my time for other morning tasks. The nine minutes I
spend snoozing are complete freedom. If I stopped snoozing, all I would get is
ten extra minutes of sleep, and when the alarm goes off I have to be wide awake
and ready to get ready. With snoozing, I can gradually ease into my day.
If I need to wake up, no snooze, I can do it. I have done it
and will do it if needed, especially on days when my wake up time is not a
usual wake up time and I need to be awake. I just prefer to snooze.
I view it as a mini-nap, or maybe even just resting, which
have no major negative impacts on your health. The only negative thing about
snoozing that could occur is if you are not alone in the room you are sleeping
in. I am lucky enough to have my own room (which contributes to the habit) but
I can see why people would be against snoozing.
For all you who snooze, you do you! Snoozing is awesome for
those who use it for good, like I do. Just be considerate of others and maybe
take those few minutes of half-awake freedom and give yourself a pre-day pep
talk. It’ll make the start of your day a little more relaxed.
